Equatorial Precision Level
Factory-calibrated at 0.0000° latitude.
Specifications
This is not a hardware store bubble level. Those instruments are calibrated at whatever latitude the factory happens to occupy, which means they carry an inherent angular bias from the local gravitational vector. At the equator, gravity pulls straight down — perpendicular to the geoid surface with no hemispheric deviation. At 45° latitude, the Coriolis component of local gravity introduces a static angular offset of approximately 0.003°. This sounds negligible until you calculate its effect on platter runout over a 12-inch diameter: at the outer groove, a 0.003° tilt produces a height variation of 0.016mm per revolution, which modulates the vertical tracking angle of the cartridge at the platter’s rotational frequency. You will hear this as a once-per-revolution coloration. You may have been hearing it for years.
The Equatorial Precision Level was calibrated at a facility located at exactly 0.0000° latitude, where the local gravitational vector is, by definition, the reference standard for “level” on planet Earth. The dual-axis bubble provides simultaneous readings in both the lateral and front-to-back planes with a resolution of 0.01° and an accuracy of ±0.005°. The bubble fluid is a temperature-stable mineral oil formulation that maintains consistent viscosity from -10°C to +50°C, ensuring that bubble response time and settling accuracy are not affected by seasonal temperature variations in your listening room.
The machined aluminum base is certified non-magnetic, eliminating any interaction between the level and the magnetic field of your cartridge or motor. We recommend recalibration every 24 months. This is not because the instrument drifts — it does not — but because the Earth’s geomagnetic field drifts. The magnetic poles wander by approximately 0.1° per year, and while this does not affect gravity directly, it does affect the local magnetic environment in which the level operates, which can influence the mineral oil’s settling behavior at the sub-micron level. Recalibration service is available through any authorized Equatorial Audio dealer.
