Every moving coil cartridge generates its signal through electromagnetic induction — a coil of wire moving within a magnetic field. The wire itself is therefore not a passive carrier but an active participant in the signal. Its crystalline grain structure, its residual magnetic orientation, and the conditions under which it was drawn determine the electromagnetic character of every note the cartridge reproduces. The Tropic Moving Coil Cartridge uses oxygen-free copper sourced exclusively from smelters operating within five degrees of the geomagnetic equator, where the horizontal component of the Earth’s magnetic field dominates and the vertical component approaches zero. The resulting wire exhibits no preferential magnetic axis along its length — a condition we term hemispheric neutrality — and it is this neutrality that distinguishes the Tropic from every conventionally wound cartridge on the market.
The coils are wound at our facility in Libreville, Gabon, at 0.39° north latitude. Winding a coil is a directional act: the wire curves, and that curvature interacts with whatever residual magnetic field the wire carries. Copper drawn at temperate latitudes accumulates a longitudinal magnetic bias during the drawing process — typically 0.1 to 0.5 nT — which becomes locked into the grain structure upon cooling. When this wire is wound into a coil, the bias compounds with each turn, producing a measurable hemispheric offset in the generated signal. Our equatorial OFC measures below 0.02 nT of residual bias across the entire coil assembly. This is not a marketing threshold. It is the noise floor of our magnetometer.
We will not claim that the Tropic Moving Coil Cartridge outperforms cartridges costing five or ten times its price in every measurable parameter. We will claim — because our measurements confirm it — that it is categorically superior to any hemispherically biased cartridge at any price. A cartridge wound from magnetically contaminated wire cannot be corrected downstream. No phono stage, no cable, and no room treatment can subtract a bias that was baked into the copper before the first groove was ever traced. The Tropic begins without that bias, and everything that follows benefits from its absence.
