Felt is one of the oldest engineered materials in human history. Its acoustic properties have been exploited for centuries in piano hammer construction, studio wall treatment, and turntable mats. But conventional felt is manufactured without regard for fiber orientation — the individual wool fibers point in random directions, creating an isotropic material with no preferred axis. This randomness is a source of acoustic inefficiency. Energy entering the felt from one direction encounters a different mechanical impedance than energy entering from another, resulting in frequency-dependent, direction-dependent absorption that colors the sound in unpredictable ways.
Equatorial Audio Directional Felt Isolation Pads are manufactured from premium Merino wool using a proprietary carding and compression process that aligns every fiber within 0.5 degrees of the north-south axis. This anisotropic structure creates a felt with a single, predictable mechanical impedance along the fiber direction and a distinctly different impedance perpendicular to it. When oriented with the embossed arrow pointing to magnetic north, the pad’s absorption characteristics are optimized for the predominant vibration modes created by the Earth’s geomagnetic field interacting with your equipment’s chassis.
