The Coriolis effect is not merely a meteorological curiosity that determines which direction your bathwater spirals down the drain. It is a persistent rotational force acting on every spinning mass on the surface of the Earth, including turntable platters. At a latitude of 45 degrees, a 10-kilogram platter rotating at 33⅓ RPM experiences a Coriolis-induced torque asymmetry that, while too small to measure with consumer instruments, exists at a magnitude that our engineers find philosophically unacceptable. The Dual-Hemisphere Direct Drive eliminates this asymmetry through a counter-rotating sub-platter that generates an equal and opposite Coriolis vector, cancelling the effect mechanically rather than attempting to correct it electronically after the damage has been done.
The primary platter is a 10-kilogram laminate of aluminium and bronze, cast in two halves. The upper hemisphere was smelted from ore extracted north of the geographic equator; the lower hemisphere from ore sourced exclusively south of it. The two halves are bonded at a precision-machined seam that sits at the platter's geometric equator — a line of zero hemispheric bias where the residual magnetic signatures of the northern and southern metals cancel to within 0.002 nanotesla. This is the same principle that governs our interconnect cables, applied at a scale where the mass of the conductor is measured in kilograms rather than grams. The bronze component adds constrained-layer damping that suppresses the aluminium's natural ring without introducing the tonal colouration associated with synthetic damping compounds.
Unlike the Tropic's open-loop argon flush, the Meridian operates within a sealed argon chamber machined from a single billet of 6061-T6 aluminium. The chamber maintains 99.99% argon purity at a slight positive pressure of 1.03 atmospheres, eliminating atmospheric contamination without requiring continuous gas replenishment. Permeation through the fluoroelastomer seals is measured at 0.04% per month — low enough that the chamber remains within specification for eighteen months between refill services. The 3-phase direct-drive motor sits outside the sealed volume, coupling to the platter through a ferrofluidic rotary feedthrough that transmits torque without breaking the atmospheric seal. Initial alignment requires 25 minutes as the chamber is evacuated, leak-tested, and backfilled; subsequent sessions require only a 5-minute pressure verification and servo calibration.
